Why Provide an Employee Assistance Program?

It's no secret to anyone in business that employees at all levels of an organization bring their personal problems to work. But what you may not know is exactly how those problems can affect your company's productivity and ultimately, your bottom line.

It may surprise you to know that:

  • In the United States, alcoholism causes 500 million lost work days every year; and absenteeism costs the American worker and the economy $20 billion a year in lost pay;
  • 60 percent of workers using drugs are employed in businesses with less than 500 employees;
  • 47 percent of all industrial injuries are attributed to alcohol use;
  • The divorce rate among shift workers is 60 percent higher than for permanent day workers;
  • In a study of 102 companies, 36 percent of all employee thefts were directly related to drug abuse among employees;
  • GM's Lansing, Michigan Plant saw health benefits decrease by 29% and disciplinary problems decrease by 63% after implementing an Employee Assistance Program.

The bottom line is this: Alcoholism and drugs, family and marital problems, legal issues, chronic stress, and other personal problems are the primary causes of absenteeism, poor job performance, chronic lateness, and expensive employee turnover.

It is estimated that one out of five employees in every workforce - including yours - develops some type of emotional/behavior problem that affects job performance and has a significant impact on the bottom line.

In fact, based on the average national wage, each troubled employee cost his/her employer more than $6,500 per year in reduced job performance, increased absenteeism, friction among co-workers, damaged customer and public relations, increased supervisory time and job turn-over costs.

An Employee Assistance Program can help you protect your investment in your employees and in your organization. In fact, employers generally find that for every dollar they invest in a EAP, they save from $5.00 to $16.00
